Cyber Monday Deals, closely following Black Friday (and even early bird Thanksgiving shopping opportunities) are made to order for those of us who love our pet chickens and are looking for related items.

The Wall Street Journal published an article, entitled 'Fowl Fans See Golden Eggs in Catering to Pet-Chicken Market', written by Sarah E. Needleman, in their online edition on July 8, 2010. You can read it here. It featured entrepreneurial ventures from chicken diapers to baby chicks. Since then, there have no doubt been many more adventuresome entrepreneurs catering to pet chicken enthusiasts.

This is a market, that, according to a recent study conducted by Eastern Washington University Communications Department student, Desalyn Graybeal, reveals that our pet chicken hobby does, indeed, make up a diverse 'sub-culture' of today's society. So, who are some of the other enterprising people who've started fulfilling needs for this "Pet-Chicken Market" since that article was published? Well . . .

One Entrepreneur has solved the Problem of How to Mobilize a Chicken Coop . . . and Turn it Into a Chicken Tractor

His name is Harry, and he says his product is the result of a need his wife identified. "My wife decided to start raising chickens for the fun of it and so that we could at least partially control our food supply", he related.

He said that "As a romantic, she wanted to free-range the chickens, but was determined to keep them protected from predators all the while."

She had researched the issue before beginning to build a coop she fully intended would provide the best possible protection from dogs, coyotes, and other common predators of chickens. Then, he said, "she asked me for suggestions on how to stiffen it up; after awhile, I figured out how she could add wheels so it could be moved around."

It turned out to be just what she was hoping for! In an interview last week, Harry stated that "My wife showed me videos of coops that had wheels, but there were none available in the form of a kit that could be attached to an existing chicken coop so that it could be mobilized." Harry said he got ideas from existing chicken tractors that others had used successfully, and that "I think I managed to come up with a pretty good kit."

Unsustainable? Fake Eggs, Forget Chickens in Your Backyard

No, not fake eggs like those plastic ones you fill with candy and put in your kids Easter baskets! Did you see what this company in San Francisco is working on - for us all to eat?

A surfing trip (online) brought me to this CBS Local site in San Francisco where there's an article about a company on a valiant mission to save us from ourselves. The owner is quoted saying that raising chickens and eating the eggs is ". . . just unsustainable." Wait a minute, isn't  growing chickens in your backyard and eating the eggs they lay called "sustainable living"?

Apparently there are a few concerns relating to:

1. The tight living conditions of factory chickens.
2. The killer cholesterol contained in eggs.
3. Chickens becoming diseased and spreading the diseases to us.

Apparently, the concoction developed from high protein veggies is already being added to some mayonnaise, and cookies are being made using these new eggs . . .it's always a good idea to read labels. If you're allergic to eggs, it's a good option for you, but if you want the real thing and don't have any cholesteral issues, not that attractive a choice.

It struck me as amazing to find this article right on the heels of many cities finally winning their battles for the right to raise a few hens as pets and egg providers - and while residents of many more cities are still fighting for that right. Now the whole healthy, sustainable living, organic urban farm movement is being debunked - as unhealthy and unsustainable.

Pet Chickens Asked to Model Fashionable Attire! Sneak Peek - but act fast

Okay, this is going to sound a little weird . . . you ready?  Well, it was a day like any other - full of drudgery (ahem, don't tell my boss!) when out of the blue I got the call.
My friend wanted to know if she could use my (rather tame) chickens to model some fashionable creations. Uh, really??! "Yes" she said. She told me this story:
She'd seen a sign at a county fair in the poultry 4-H quarters, announcing a contest for 'Best Dressed Chicken'. Having had a 'passion for fashion' for years, her imagination took over and she began to design and hand-sew what she insisted were "to-die-for" outfits. Along the way, she'd learned that it was a relaxing, enjoyable hobby and that it brought out her creativity. How could I not be intrigued? I mean how often could this happen in the life of an everyday habitual chicken raising enthusiast?
Here's the scoop - this is something I've become kind of excited about. The modelling session is over, and my chickens performed like born (er, hatched) professional models! Talk about cute chicks!! Plus, I've fallen down on the job of following up, so most of them probably surmise that I died in the past few months. Deadline of June 1st -- Couple Wants Their Chickens Back!

Here's an update on the case about Brenda Helm, the lady from Niskayuna, NY who has had her flock of chickens taken away . . . she's distributing a petition. She also has a Facebook Page you can go to  stay informed about her case. You can find it at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Niskayuna-chickens/126485547418488 . Brenda says the Town wants her to stop, because the "emails, letters and faxes are overwhelming the town board and officials". She is so grateful to everyone who has taken the time to help.

Unfortunately, though, she still doesn't have her chickens back home yet. If you're a fellow pet chicken enthusiast, you can imagine how she feels, so please go and lend support! She will appreciate your expression of concern, and the continuing overwhelm at her Town offices.
